History Curriculum
Our Vision
At St Luke’s, we aim to create an inclusive and enriching environment that enables children to develop a deep understanding of the past, its significance and its impact on the present and future. By providing aspirational approaches to learning, our curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils acquire a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We strive for every child to be able to think critically, draw connections and articulate their insights about historical events and figures to help them reach their God given potential.
Guided by the wisdom of God, we seek to teach values of respect and compassion, enabling pupils to appreciate diverse cultures, beliefs and perspectives throughout history. By fostering a comprehensive and reflective History curriculum, we ensure that our pupils are not only historians, but also empathetic and understanding of their heritage and committed to understanding the world around them.
Here are some of the fun and exciting ways that we bring History to life at St Luke’s:
History
What will my child be learning about in History during their time at St Luke's?
Our History units are sequenced to build pupils’ sense of time, cause and consequence and how different periods shaped modern Britain and the wider world. Links between units ensure continuity in key themes such as conflict, society, beliefs, artefacts and changes over time. Each unit builds on prior learning and prepares children for future study, fostering curiosity and critical thinking about the past and its impact on life today. What kind of activities does my child do in their History lessons?
In History, we encourage children to share their learning in many different ways—through writing, drama, technology, discussions, workshops, group and partner tasks and whole-class activities. Have a look at some of our work below!
History Work
How do stories bring History to life at St Luke's?
From January 2026, every history lesson will begin with a carefully chosen story, picture book or historical text that immerses children in the period they are studying. From EYFS texts such as What’s in Your Pocket, Peg? and Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge, which introduce children to memory, artefacts and living history, through to rich, challenging texts in Upper Key Stage 2 such as The Place for Me, Arthur and the Golden Rope and You Wouldn’t Want to Be a Victorian Schoolchild!, our History book spine has been thoughtfully selected to deepen understanding and spark curiosity. These texts help children build historical vocabulary, develop empathy, explore different perspectives and make meaningful connections with the past. By starting each lesson with a shared story or image-rich text, we ensure that history is accessible, engaging and rooted in a strong culture of reading. Check out the stories below!
